It's with a little bit of a heavy heart, but also mixed with excitement for the future, that I formally announce the closure of beyond pink and blue.
It has been an interesting 5 years and I've experienced a lot from running this great store. Obviously a big part is because of you guys!
Thank you for your support, in the many forms it has come in: shopping (big one there!), listening, participating, sharing with others, being excited and open minded, to name just a few.

So the good bit (for you) is we are having a CLOSING DOWN SALE. Obviously, everything must go and all stock is at least at cost price.
There are some terms: no lay by, no returns or exchange, no points. (Click on the picture to go shop.)

Standing with my back to the warm spring sun, I find a rhythm as I work. Bend, straighten, peg. The basket empties, and the washing snaps softly in the breeze as I stand back and take it in. My mind is still adjusting, a tiny, perfect daughter, after two small precious boys, my cherished little family. The line full of pink, after four years of blue.
My daydreaming slams to a stop, the boys demand my attention. We play, we run, and then I pause, an ear turned towards the open bedroom window, as I hear the cry of our little girl, wanting to join the fun. I lift her from her cot, remove her wrap as her tiny fingers curl round my fingers. Just like her brothers, her tiny perfection takes my breath away. Three beautiful, enchanting small people, who fill my heart and my days. I am blessed.

Once apon a time, boys wore pink

It seems there are no definite facts that claim who owned pink or blue throughout the ages. I've found for Western culture the following:
Babies and children wore white for a long time, gender was not an important factor before the 1900's.
It wasn't until the 1920's that Western culture started assigning the colour pink (and blue) to an individual gender.
Pink was actually an appropriate boy colour, because it was seen as more masculine, being close to the colour red.
Blue was seen as a more dainty and delicate colour, so was appropriate for girls (also think Virgin Mary).
But rumors are, the two colors were used interchangeably until World War II.
During that time one of the cruder examples of the shift for pink as a more feminine colour was a pink triangle to identify homosexuals in Nazi prison camps.
After the war women stopped working and became housewives, encouraged to wear pink lipstick and own pink cars....a more rosie outlook to life and family after the war.
Barbie was born shortly after and, of course, pink was her colour of choice.
Pink became the colour for girls and blue as a color for boys.

And so here we are today.
Sometimes fashion allows men to wear pink (or salmon), boys have a dash of pink in their t-shirt design and baby boys will get mistakened for girls if they're anywhere near pink.
On the other hand, majority of girls seem to gravitate toward the colour pink and dad's won't allow their sons to don anything in the pink family.
This is all generally speaking, of course, because if you are reading this post, you already know that kids of any gender can like any colour they want... even pink.

It's a bit of a girlie colour, but boys love pink too! It may be shamed and in the closet, but it's sweet and lovely to see on rosy cheeks- which can be found on boys after running around, playing shenanigans!
So lets embrace the colour PINK this month, with love.

Sunshine for our Sunshine state

At the moment I'm by myself at home and have had time to reflect on the devastation in Queensland. I think a bit of sunshine from our hearts needs to be sent to that part of our sunny country.
A couple of years ago, you may remember, I was running Rainbow Comfort Packs for the Children effected by the Victorian Bush fires. It was close to home, so became automatic for me to do it.
My questions to you all are:
1. Do you feel you want to help in some way, but don't know how or have the funds?
2. If you remember the Rainbow Comfort Packs, do you think you'd like to contribute to this idea again?

A refresher or to briefly enlighten those who don't know what I'm talking about when I mention Rainbow Comfort Packs, read about them here, when we were doing them for the Vic. Bush fires.
If this begins again, there will be more control as to what goes into the packs and better co-ordination with what we need etc.

Anyway, please leave your thoughts, ideas and links to auctions etc that are raising funds for this cause.

I loved (and still do actually!) the movie Yellow Submarine by The Beatles. In fact Mr bpab and I collected the figurines when they came out. The girls have not been allowed to 'play' with them and thus reside in a giant cardboard box on top of a cupboard. ONE day we will get them out and re-enact the movie, but for now.....

Look up you tube for Yellow Submarine video clips, actually better still, get a copy of the movie and just sit down with the kiddies and watch it. Blow their little minds.

We soooo need the space and there are some OLD favourites that really need homes, so our sale is one not to be missed! We have 'slashed' our prices big time on most products.

Boon makes bath time a pleasure!

We are very happy to welcome boon into our store. The first part of their range is dedicated to BATH TIME fun and organisation! Hooray I hear you say.
Well it's very welcomed around our home anyway.

The colours are bright, there are no holes in any of the toys (so they will not fill up with water and get all black inside and go mouldy), the floating toys, like the ring toss game and the water bugs shown above, are different and are good for all ages to play with.
The Odd Ducks are quirky as they're shapes are unique... even to each other. There are 4 to collect.
Lastly, keeping toys and bathing accessories (like bubble bath and shampoo) will be a joy to store, thanks to the frog pod (pictured) and bug pod. Their body is a scoop which detaches from the stand. You scoop up all the toys in the bath and let the water drain away through the holes in the body. Then attach to the stand again. There is a tray behind the head for accessories too.
Big bonus of boon products are that they do not contain BpA!

Makes you want to play in the bath again doesn't it? That's where I'm typing this from!

Yunginz shoes on sale!

The Yunginz™ brand came to fruition in 2007 when Jenny Celebrin got frustrated with not being able to purchase trendy shoes in small sizes for her daughter. All the decent fashionable shoes seemed to only be available from a size 12 and upwards so the challenge was on! Teaming up with Yolanda La Gorcé - another mum (also good friend and designer extraordinaire!) Jenny and Yolanda combined their marketing and design skills and Yunginz™ was born.

On sale Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only. (this week.... like, now!)

Heads up!
All these brands will be hosting their own mini sale at beyond pink and blue from Monday 19th April. Duration for each sale will be approx. 2 - 3 days or shorter if stock sells out.
We will be letting a few brands go, so the prices may be very low!
We've also randomly generated a list of all the brands, so it will be a surprise as to when a particular brand will have their sale.... that's the kooky part.

Edible peanut butter play dough!

Handy for kids who eat the play dough while they play with it!
Visit Instructables for the instructions. It has peanut butter and honey in it, so careful who you give the play dough to (allergies).
There is even a chocolate one there too!

I've been busy whipping up lovely petal tutu skirts for bpab.
I originally made one for La to wear to her BLUE birthday party last year and it was an instant hit with everyone there PLUS it's her most favourite skirt! Hooray! (She's a nappy and singlet kinda gal, so her wanting to wear a skirt is joy to me!)

Anyway, you can now have one for your very own. I am making a small selection, so the sizes are random in the shop. "How odd!" you exclaim..... it's because I am using re-claimed (or pre-loved) elastic waisted skirts that are in great condition, like the one below here:
Then washing it and turning it into something like the wonderful skirt below:

So you see, the sizes will be random, depending on the skirts I find.

The OTHER option is for YOU to send me an elastic waist skirt (about knee length) and choosing your own colours to go with it. I'll make up your very own petal tutu skirt and send it back to you! (You'll save $10 on the retail price, or $5 if you want me to replace the elastic around the waist.)

Now we are extending the life of our favourite skirts or bringing back to life an unwanted, out-grown piece of kids clothing! There will be more to come in this inventive range too.

Fun mandala colour in

Mandala means circle in Indian Sanskrit. Colouring in a mandala is a great way to spend time focusing on a positive shape, like a circle, creating a medative state while you take the time to completely cover the mandala's surface.
After it is finished, it looks fantastic as a framed work of art or turned into something functional.... like a laminated place mat or wrapping paper!
Print an extra one out for you to do while your child is doing theirs, it will create a bit of 'time away' from everyday things.

I will be designing more mandalas for you to do. Please let me know any themes you would like to see, so I have an idea for a design.

It's official, beyond pink and blue has it's own in-house label, smartly going by the name of bpab.
I know I don't have to explain what these letters stand for, because if you are a fan of beyond pink and blue, you're a clever cookie!
So far the only goodies we have in store under bpab, are our fabulous lucky dips. These are very popular for parties, surprises and rewards. They come in $2 and $5 value AND you can select which age group and gender the dip is for. Hooray!

We have lots of 'proper' instruments in Mat's studio, so the girls have a good time trying them out. Chai is drawn to the violin and La loves the electronic drums (she's a human beat box actually!). I wonder what they will want to learn when they are older?

Djeco Flight of Fancy mobile

Spent a few loooonng minutes today trying to re-assemble our own mobile, which we took down from the dining room light to make way for a party recently. I proceeded to do this without looking at the set up diagram that comes with the mobile. It was not working, as it requires mathematics to calculate the ratio of balance with air (and sticky fingers from children who shouldn't be touching it while mummy is trying to put HER mobile together)!
Of course, because I'm not a scientist, the mobile kept swaying on an up right angle.... not at all balanced like it should. So I found the instructions and promptly assembled the bird mobile rather quickly and it now sways majestically in little La's room. Hooray!
You can attempt to show me up, if you like. The mobile spans 80cm, so you'll need a large flat surface to assemble it.

First day at Kinda today!

Chai had her very first day of being anywhere structured, supposedly without parents and siblings..... 4 year old kindergarten!
I say supposedly, because she wouldn't let me leave her there.
That was okay, I had planned to possibly be hanging around as Chai had expressed concern about me not being there with her.
So I hung out, scared a couple of shy kids, made small talk with a few others, re-molded smashed play dough, cut up fruit, swept up sand around the sand pit..... all while quietly observing the goings on and conversations of the little folk.

I left Chai to experience her new surroundings on her own, only encouraging Chai (if she approached me) when she felt lost or confused. As she had not been in this situation before, she had a few of these moments. I'd direct her to her teachers or another activity and then she'd be right. By the end I could hear her voice amongst others and one of my happy thoughts were 'here comes the chatter box' and knew she was settling in. Chai even found a kindred spirit, another girl who also had plaits in her hair and wearing a similar necklace as herself.

On our way home, Chai told me how much she loves kinda. We had a little chat about how the other mummy and daddy's came back to get their children and maybe I could do that. Plus, they need to have a turn cutting up the fruit as well. She though it would be a good idea too and decided that next time she goes to kinda, I could come back and pick her up at the end.
So that's tomorrow!

My Chai is now 5

Chai celebrated her 5th birthday on Saturday. I'm amazed at how the time has passed, as she is my first born. We had a lovely party at home, which I will share more of when I gather more photos from people who smartly captured every detail of the day.
Chai chose a PINK and PURPLE theme for her party (as they're her fave colours.... well pink has been since the moment she could choose for herself and purple is a recent addition. Amazed she has allowed purple in to her life, so strong is her love for pink!).

Chai, I love you and am so happy you chose me to be your mummy in this life. I will strive to be there for you when you want me to and to let you be your free spirit the rest of the time. Um, sorry I yell at you sometimes..... but I will continue to make you peanut butter sandwiches with the crust cut off, cut into a moon.... so long as you ask for them. xxx

It's "Music with Mat" time!

Well we finally have done it!

Rainbow Comfort Packs have gone out to kids this Christmas

Lots of shots of packs, chaos of packing, Lama doing quality control, art packs, presents ready to go!

After 3 days of working solidly (with some help) late last week, a courier came by yesterday and picked up about 20 boxes of packs and wrapped presents to take to K Mart head office in Vic. so they can be distributed to children in need this Christmas, via the Wishing Tree!
It was the best plan ever, I mean could you imagine 160 packs and 55 wrapped presents being stuffed under the Wishing Tree in Victoria Gardens, Richmond??
I ran out of fabric bags near the end and decided to wrap some up instead. Basically all that was left were TONNES of colouring books, pencil cases, pencils, textas and crayons..... so we wrapped them up as mini art packs.
That's ALL the donations now gone. It's a brilliant way to finish this chapter of this project and hope lots of kids (of all ages) will love getting something special from all of you.
I won't be 'closing' the project up for ever, but will take a break for now and when it does get going again, it will be better organised and the focus will be on kids that need some comfort in general. (And we'll definitely look into warehouse space too!)

Thanks for your help and support this year! It was a full on year for many people everywhere.
It was awesome to be able to offer help in our unique way, I hope you feel the same.

Okay! If you are one of the minority who has nothing left to do tonight.....

Spend it with the family or loved ones, be it partner, children, parents, siblings or friends.

And go see some crazy Christmas lights!!
Down in Ivanhoe (if you are in Melbourne) there is a street that plays host to those who have nothing better to do (or are on something and don't mind the crowds...). We've been a couple of times and after each time of almost loosing our minds to chaos, we vow never to visit again. Then we forget and think 'Hey, how about going to Ivanhoe?' It truly is an amazing site and you'll either love it and plan to do it to your own house next year, or you hate it and seek the calm of your own plain front door sensor light.

If the weather is good....
Hit the pavement and explore the streets in your own neighbourhood. There are bound to be some great sites to behold. (We've already done this and stumbled across some interesting yards! Go Balwyn North!!)

If the weather is so/so...
Jump in the car and drive around looking into front windows of houses for those beautiful flashing Christmas tree lights. Drive around the Yarra Bend Boulevard (Kew boathouse area) and stop at the city view bit to see what's going on over the city.

I wish you happiness, safety and the ability to laugh until your stomach hurts and tears of joy stream from your eyes, but not wet yourself or spray mulled wine out your nose!

Something to do tomorrow (the 24th): so you can plan today...

Treat the kids (or yourself or the whole family!) to something special under their pillow.
It will be easy anyway to get everyone into bed tomorrow night (especially for those who believe Santa is dropping by)... but just in case, put a surprise for them to discover.

* new pj's would be fantastic!
* a Christmas story book to read together
* (for older kids) a glow stick to hang near by
* a cuddly something (no, not a puppy! Try a stuffed Christmas character... and not a noisy one either.)

Christmas is a time to stop and think about others.... and not everyone is as fortunate as ourselves. Be mindful of countries, nationalities, ever your neighbours who may be struggling at this time of the year to make ends meet, let alone lavishing everyone with gifts and stuffing their belly with gourmet delights!

Some ideas for you:
* donate to giving trees (Kmart is one we do every year)
* think of making a donation of money or food (do it as a family gift)

Remember the people who live in your street...
* bake some biscuits or a pudding and leave it at their door step from "the elves next door"
* be neighbourly and find out who's away during the Christmas / New Year period and work out amongst yourselves about clearing mailboxes and keeping a look out on the house.

Lastly, if you're holding a grudge against somebody or something..... let it go!
Enjoy family and friends and be grateful for what you have in your life.

If the weather is okay and night warm, why not pitch a tent in the back yard and camp under the stars! Tell each other stories and watch the stars come out.... might be hard to see if you live in the city....

Okay, another alternative could be if you have a Christmas tree inside, why not set up camp under it for the evening and watch those lights instead!
Put on some Christmas movies or music and chill out for the night.
Who ever happens to fall asleep under the tree, can stay there!

If you have time to think about how you are going to 'wrap' up the present, you'll make the gift extra special!

Use re-usable packaging:
* fabric bags that fold up into small wallets
* nice strong boxes (decorated or covered in paper or fabric)
* tea towels
* canisters, baskets, funky pencil case

Paper:
* re-cycled paper, exotic newspaper (other languages)
* sheet music (Christmas tunes!)
* decorate butchers paper (big white sheets from the butcher!) get the kids to draw pictures on it

Personalise presents:
* hair ribbon wrapped around present into a bow
* biscuit cutter with name tag attached to gift

The ideas are endless! Just look around your home for inspiration.

Do you have an answering machine or service for your home?
Why not get really silly and record a festive message! (It may help remind people that it will be Christmas soon....)

* sing a song (just the chorus will do)

* put on a pretend voice and introduce yourself as Santa, Jesus or the Christmas fairy from on top of the tree, just standing in for the usual answering service....

* get the kids to say something Christmas-like (not what they'd like as a present!)

* play a song in the back ground (quietly) and say your message.

It's the joy of getting lots of little presents that make Santa Sacks such a hit! Both the girls, mummy and daddy get one in our family (a good excuse to get all the little things you need, plus some extra spoils!)

Hard and fast rules:

* decide here and now who gets one!

* find a sack for each person. It can be anything really.... pillow case, knitted sock / stocking, gift bag.... look, as long as it's big enough to fit everything in, you can't go wrong!
* set a total $ ($50 or $100) you want to spend per person.

* fill the sack with small gifts up to $5 or $10 per gift only (so, yes, some presents may be big, it's up to you whether you look at sizes too)

* think about what they need for school or work... hobbies and interests....

* food snacks and treats are great too (stuff they maybe don't always get to eat!) Good quality chocolates for the grown ups...

* activities for them to do on Christmas day... games, books, novelties (great for when grown ups are busy, resting, car trips etc)

* not a must, but you may want to wrap each present 1. exciting to unwrap 2. can make the sack last all day! 3. plus helps them concentrate on one gift at a time (good for littlies) Use left over scraps of wrapping paper, or tissue paper that isn't up to scratch for normal gift wrapping.

* decide now when they get to explore their sacks... Put at the end of their bed for them to do first thing when they wake up? Or under the tree with the other gifts? Do you do it together as a family or let each person secretly go through their sacks and compare later?

Handy tip: With kiddies, it's a great idea to take their sacks with you (where ever you will be going) for the day.
*** we do this every Christmas with our little ones and it was a hit... plus it keeps all their pressies together.

It's the personal touches, the thought and time involved that make gifts from the maker worth giving. You don't have to be an artist or a craft nut to use the resources around you!
Need some inspiration for handmade gifts?

* handmade produce (jams, pantry stuff, veggies, fruit from your garden, a cutting or seeds from a favourite plant)

* handmade crafts (stuff you've sewn, carved, knitted, scrap booked, anything you can make with your hands!! Or your feet, if you're that way inclined....)

* Check out this great idea to make.... it's a CD case calendar!

* Got kids? Use some of their drawings from earlier in the year, laminated or framed... or made into place mats or as wrapping paper.

This year, I bought a cute cake tin which leaves heart impressions on the top of the cake (thanks Ikea!) and will be baking flourless orange cakes, using oranges from our prized tree! Then giving them out to family in re-usable cake storage containers. Chai and La (both still under 5) will be painting pictures on mini canvases for family gifts. On Mat's side of the family, they are the only grandchildren / nieces .... so everyone should get a kick out of those.

Are you familiar with or remember making a book of Vouchers at school?
You know the kind... 'I will clean my room', 'good for 1 hug', 'breakfast in bed'.....
Well, what's stopping you from giving some now as gifts?

Offer your skills / talents... what are you great at that you can offer as a service?
Think: around the home, garden, looking after kids, cooking a meal, taking them out for an activity.
Just think of something/s that are appropriate for that person and give a voucher stating what you are willing to do for them!
Or if you are really game: leave the voucher blank for them to fill out and give back to you when they're ready to redeem it!

If you can't bring yourself to commit to anything, buying vouchers for services like massages and gifts like movie, concert or sports tickets, have a low eco-impact.... as they are gifts that will be used and the only thing they need to find a place for is the memories of the great experience they had.

I've included some DIY Vouchers below, for you to print out. Cut and copy them (or drag the image and drop it onto your desk top... boy I love Macs!). * Use pretty paper to print onto and then back them onto a matching cardboard * Print them onto plain cardboard, then decorate them with stickers etc.

The idea "Kris Kringle" is also known as "Secret Santa" ...

* great for large/ extended families (usually for the grown ups, as they get older, they don't need or want anything anymore!), so it helps with the dilemma of what to buy for every single person you know, just because you are related.

* each person draws a name out of a "hat" , they buy a gift for that person only.
Set a dollar limit, so it's fair for everyone. That way you can buy a fantastic present for only one person and you'll get a fantastic present too! (hopefully...)

* you can also have a list of needs/wants attached to each name, so it helps the giver with gift ideas!

*** We tried to get this idea going this year with both sides of the family, but apparently you need to plant the seed much earlier than November.... say, the Christmas before!

Oh yeah, unless there are dozens of little kids in the family.... don't include them in the Kris Kringle, that's just mean! hahaha

Don't overlook Breakfast on Christmas morning!
If you don't already, make breaky a special meal too... it doesn't have to be big or elaborate, you'll be eating through the day no doubt, but it's a great way to start the day.

Some ideas:
Spice up muesli or porridge with chopped figs, dates, nuts and tangerine segments.
Serve smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on triangles of wholegrain toast.
Have pancakes with strawberries and brandied cream (a bit naughty, but hey once a year is really okay!)

Don't forget drinks:
Chai tea or the many exotic flavours of Green tea
Hot chocolate (or iced if it's a hot morning)
Fruit smoothies or juices

Sit outside or go to the local park with a blanket for a different view to the morning.
Then again, if you have kids, it may be easiest to have made up some muffins the night before and scoff them down between present / playing frenzies!

Here's a favourite sweet recipe, often made by my husband, for you to try out.
Will serve as something special to have on hand for unexpected guests or a yummy gift idea!

Mat's Semolina Squares

This is the traditional version (which has a sweet spices flavour).
A variation (chocolate!) will follow at the end.

Ingredients:
6 tbsp pure ghee (or butter)
3 whole cloves
3 whole cardamoms
8 tbsp coarse semolina
1/2 tsp saffron
1/2 cup sultanas
10 tbsp sugar
1 and 1/4 cups water
1 and 1/4 cups milk

* Place the ghee in a saucepan and melt over medium heat.

* Add the cloves and cardamoms to the melted butter and reduce the heat, stirring to mix.

* Add the semolina to the mixture in the pan and stir-fry until it turns a little darker.

* Add the saffron, sultanas and the sugar to the semolina mixture, stirring to mix well.

* Pour in the water and milk and stir-fry the mixture continuously until the semolina has softened. Add a little more water if required.

* Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the semolina to a shallow serving dish and smooth the top with the back of a spoon. If you wish, you can sprinkle 1/2 cup of desiccated coconut over the top.

* Leave the semolina to cool down and then put in the fridge for about an hour. When set, cut into squares, then triangles and devour!

STORE IN THE FRIDGE AND EAT THAT DAY OR NEXT... IF YOU CAN WAIT THAT LONG!

CHOCOLATE VARIATION:

* Follow the same recipe as above, except:
- replace cloves and cardamom with 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and 1 - 2 tbsp cocoa powder (adding these at the same time)
- also get rid of the saffron and sultanas

Cringe when someone asks you this question?
Why not set up a gift registry or wish list for everyone in your family?

* list all your wants/needs and let others know about your list- if they ask, you can give them the list / link.
Every member in our family has a registry and we treat it as a wish list. We add to them all the time through out the year and when an occasion comes up, we have ideas at the ready!
It's also been great for buying something in secret, without giving anything away... and knowing they're going to love it.

* suggest this to "hard to buy for" people.... you know the ones.. they have everything! What could you possibly give them??

The usual dilemma for most people... what do I do with all these cards? (the ones that you received over the Christmas / New Year holidays)

Options:

* MAKE SURE THEY GET RECYCLED INTO SOMETHING NEW
Visit the festive recycling website by PlanetArk for ideas.

* KEEP THEM (memories...)
In a box with anything else you want to keep from that occasion.
In a scrapbook of that years special stuff.

* ART & CRAFT
Cut out any pictures from the front of cards and use for scrap booking, art projects,
kids to play with, create mobiles...

* HANDMADE TREE DECORATIONS
Cut out any nice designs, stick another piece of card on the back along with some hanging
ribbon. You could even add sequins or glitter for that extra bit of festive sparkle!

* RE-USE, RE-CLAIM
Glue pretty paper on the inside of old cards to cover previous writing......
and send them again. (hmmm, back to the person who sent it to you the year before??)

So there you go!
